Come On In My Kitchen (Robert Johnson) The woman I love, took from my best friend. Some joker got lucky stole her back again. You better come on in my kitchen, ‘Cause it’s goin’ to be raining outdoors. Well, she’s gone. I know she won’t come back: I’ve taken her last nickel out of her’nation sack. You better come on in my kitchen, ‘Cause it’s goin’ to be ______ outdoors. When a woman gets in trouble, everybody throws her down: Lookin’ for a good friend; one can’t be found. You better come on in my kitchen, ‘Cause it’s goin’ to be raining outdoors. [Can’t you hear that wind hollerin’] [Come listen to that wind outside…] You better come on in my kitchen, ‘Cause it’s goin’ to be raining outdoors. Winter time is comin’, it’s gon’ be snow. You can’t make the winter, babe, just drivin’ on so: You better come on in my kitchen, ‘Cause it’s goin’ to be raining outdoors.

Crazy Love (Van Morrison) I can hear her heartbeat from a thousand miles. And the heaven’s open every time she smiles. And when I come to her, that’s where I belong. Yeah, I run into her like a river song. She give me love, love, love, love: Crazy Love She give me love, love, love, love: Crazy Love She’s got a fine sense of humour when I’m feeling lowdown. And when I come to her when the sun goes down: Take away my sorrow, take away my grief Take away my heartache in the night like a theif. She give me love, love, love, love: Crazy Love She give me love, love, love, love: Crazy Love And I need her in the daytime. And I want her in the night. And I long to throw my arms around her: Kiss and hug her, kiss and hug her tight. And when I’m returning from so far away, She give me some sweet loving – brighten up my day. And she make me righteous, and she make me whole, And she make me mellow way down in my soul. She give me love, love, love, love: Crazy Love She give me love, love, love, love: Crazy Love

Date For Church (Joe Henry) I’ve got a date for church tonight. I’m meeting her inside. So I’m goin’ down to Miller Road, try and catch me a ride. I’ve got a date in the second pew. And if you don’t see me, I might be late, might just be watchin’ her from the balcony. I’ve seen her home so many times. I’ve seen her up in town. I’ve seen her slippin’ out the back When her mother’s shades were down. I’ve got a date every Wednesday night, but I don’t close my eyes for prayer. And if I leave before the closing hymn, she’ll never know I was even there. She’ll never know. She’ll never know. (2x)

Hard Times, Come Again No More (Stephen Foster) As we pause in life’s pleasures and count its many tears Let us all taste the hungers of the poor. There’s a song that will linger forever in our ears: Hard times, come again no more. It’s a song and a sigh of the weary. Hard times, hard times, come again no more. Many days you have lingered around my cabin door. Hard times, come again no more. As we seek mirth, and beauty, and music light and gay There are frail forms fainting at the door. Though their voices are silent, their pleading looks will say: Hard times, come again no more. It’s a song and a sigh of the weary. Hard times, hard times, come again no more. Many days you have lingered around my cabin door. Hard times, come again no more. It’s a song that the wind blows across the troubled wave. It’s a cry that is heard along the shore. It’s the words that are whispered beside the lowly grave When hard times will come again no more. It’s a song and a sigh of the weary. Hard times, hard times, come again no more. Many days you have lingered around my cabin door. Hard times, come again no more.

Jealous Of The Moon (Scott Ainslie) I’m not jealous of the sun, he can shine on you all day long, I don’t care. Whatever he may see, it really makes no difference to me. But at night, when the stars come out and we lay down so many miles apart: I hum a different tune, I’m jealous of the moon. It seems so long ago and so far away. There are things I know now, I got no right to say. So where do I begin? Mostly I live somewhere in between Something Holy and some kind of sin, with my regrets over how things might have been. But when I think of you: I’m jealous of the moon. And if he charms your eyes, if he rules the tides What kind of chance do I have? How’s he keep that dark side away from you? Someday I’m going to make him jealous, too. The last set is over and the band is breakin’ down. Taxi on the corner, the only soul around. The chairs go up and lights go down. I slip out the backdoor of this little town With a street light for company High up over this empty motel lot tonight; I saw him, baby, did you? I’m jealous of the moon. And if he charms your eyes, if he rules the tides What kind of chance do I have? I’d like to put some kind of spell on you, Someday I’m going to make him jealous, too. Someday I’m going to make him jealous, too.

Love Her With A Feeling (Lowell Fulson) If you’re gonna love a woman, you got to love her with a thrill, ‘Cause if you don’t some other man will. You got to love her with a feelin’ (3x) Or you don’t love at all. No the woman don’t want that old half-way-stuff, Before you turn her lose just make sure she’s had enough. You got to love her with a feelin’ (3x) Or you don’t love at all. Well, the gal that I’m lovin’ now she is nice and tall, She stretch her legs out for you, man, you’re bound to take a fall* You got to love her with a feelin’ (3x) Or you don’t love at all. Well, the coppers brought her in but she didn’t need no bail. She shook it for that judge, you know, he put those cops in jail. She loved him with a feelin’ (2x) Yeah! You got to love her with a feelin’ Or you don’t love at all. So, if you’re gonna love a woman, you got to love her with a thrill. ‘Cause if you don’t some other man will. You got to love her with a feelin’ (3x) Or you don’t love at all.

Stones In My Passway (Robert Johnson) I’ve stones in my pathway, my road seems dark as night. (2x) And these pains in my heart: they have taken my appetite. I have a bird to whistle. I have a bird to sing. (2x) And a woman that I’m loving, boys, but that don’t mean a thing. ‘Cause my enemies have betrayed me, have over taken this boy at last. (2x) And there’s one thing for certain: I have stones all in my path. Now, you tried to take my life and all my loving, too. You laid this pathway for me, now, what’re you trying to do? I’m crying, “Please! Please! Let us be friends.” And when you hear me hollering in my pathway, rider: Open your door and let me in. I’ve got three lanes to truck on, boy, please don’t block my road. (2x) I’m feeling shamed by my rider and I’m booked and I got to go. I’ve stones in my pathway, rider, my road seems dark as night. (2x) And these pains in my heart: they have taken my appetite.

Travelin' Riverside Blues (Robert Johnson) If your man gets personal, you want to have your fun. (2x) Just come on back to Friar’s Point, mama, we can barrelhouse all night long. I got women in Vicksburg, clean on into Tennessee. (2x) But my Friar’s Point rider, now she hops all over me. Ain’t gonna state no color, but her front teeth is crowned with gold. (2x) She’s got a mortgage on my body and a lien on my soul. Lord, I’m goin’ to Rosedale, goin’ take my rider by my side. (2x) We can still barrelhouse, baby, cause it’s by that riverside. Now, you can squeeze my lemon till the juice run down my ____ [Baby, you know what I’m talkin’ about…] Yeah, you can squeeze my lemon till the juice run down my leg. But I’m goin’ back to Friar’s Point, mama, if I be rockin’ to my end.

Wayfaring Stranger (traditional) I am a poor wayfaring stranger travelin’ through this world alone. But there’s no sickness, toil or danger in that bright land to which I go. I’m going there to see my mother. I’m going there no more to roam. I’m only goin’ over Jordan. I’m only goin’ over home. I know dark clouds will gather ’round me. I know my way is rough and steep. But beautiful fields lie just beyond me, where souls redeemed their vigils keep. And I’m going there to see my father. I’m going there no more to roam. I’m only goin’ over Jordan. I’m only goin’ over home. I want to wear that crown of Glory, when I get there to that bright land. I want to shout down Satan’s story in concert with the blood-washed band. I’m going there to see my brothers; they said they’d meet me when I come. I’m only goin’ over Jordan. I’m only goin’ over home.

You Don't Know What Love Is (Don Raye/Gene DePaul) You don’t know what love is until you’ve learned the meaning of the Blues. Until you’ve loved a love you had to lose: You don’t know what love is. You don’t know how lips burn until you’ve kissed and had to pay the cost; Until you’ve flipped your heart and you have lost: You don’t know what love is. Do you know how a lost heart fears the thought of reminiscing? And lips that taste of tears lose their taste for kissing. You don’t know how hearts ache for love that cannot live yet never dies, Until you’ve faced each dawn with sleepless eyes: You don’t know what love is. You don’t know what love is.

We Can't Go On This Way (J. B. Lenoir) I don’t want to forgive you; you don’t want to forgive me. Darlin’ don’t you see we ain’t gonna let one and other be. We got to realize—we can’t go on this way. We can fly high and fly on away, But we got to come back to one and other one day. You stayed out all last night; I stayed out all night, too. Darlin’ can’t you see what we put one and other through. We got to realize—we can’t go on this way. We can fly high and fly on away, But we got to come back to one and other one day. I believe you love me and I know I love you, too. Darlin’ don’t you see–this will never do. We got to realize—we can’t go on this way. We can fly high and fly on away, But we got to come back to one and other one day.

about

My first solo CD, co-produced with the inestimable help of Tom Chapin. I waited until I felt like I could make a contribution, not just money. The collection still stands up really well. There are a couple of arrangements here that I remain inordinately proud of and still play live.
