about

Newton was a slave-ship captain for a few years, at sea most of his young life. When he repented of the trade and left the sea, he worked tirelessly to stop British involvement in the buying and selling of human beings. This song is, in its way, a very direct testimony to finding oneself out in the middle of your own ocean unsure which way to go....

This version is half-blues, half-gospel: my favorite kind of music with an emotional slide guitar part and a cry of the heart.

lyrics

Amazing Grace (John Newton)

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now I’m found;
Was blind but now I see.

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved.
How precious did that grace appear,
The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares,
We have already come.
‘Tis grace that brought us safe this far,
And grace will lead us home.

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now, I’m found;
Was blind, but now I see.
