about

John A. Lomax considered Vera Hall to be the best singer he ever got the chance to record. In the summer of 1937, in LIvingston AL, he recorded this song that Vera learned from her mother, who'd been born a slave in western Alabama. It was the only piece of music played at a ceremony at the Library of Congress that fall to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Lincoln's signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. It has always hit me hard. This arrangement is in C-minor tuning (C-G-C-G-C-Eflat). A slave song about the coffles of slaves that were marched from the eastern seaboard, chained at the neck, waist, hands and feet to the sugar and cotton plantations of the deep south in Louisiana and Mississippi in the mid-1840s and 50s.

lyrics

Another Man Done Gone (Trad./Vera Hall)

Another man done gone. [3x}
Down to New Orleans,
Another man done gone.

I didn’t know his name. [5x]

He had a long chain on. [5x]

He killed another man. [5x]

Another man done gone (reprise).
