about

The tune that led researchers to find Hurt again in 1963, from his 1928 NYC recordings. Avalon was not on the maps in 1963. But, it is now, and Mississippi John Hurt put it there!

lyrics

Avalon Blues (Mississippi John Hurt)

Avalon, my hometown, always on my mind.
Avalon, my hometown.
Pretty mamas in Avalon, want me there all the time.

I left Avalon this mornin’, about half-past nine
I left Avalon this mornin’,
Pretty mamas in Avalon, want me there all the time.

Leavin’ Avalon this morning,
throwin’ kisses and wavin’ at me
Leavin’ Avalon this morning,
Sayin’, “Come back, daddy, stay right here with me.”

Hate to tell you pretty mama, but you’ve got to know,
Hate to tell you pretty mama,
Leavin’ Avalon this morning and I ain’t coming back no more.

New York’s a good town, but it’s not for mine
New York’s a good town.
Pretty mamas in Avalon, want me there all the time.

Avalon’s a small town, got no great big trains
It’s a small town, man,
Pretty mamas in Avalon, they sure will spin your chain.

There’s just one thing, I can’t understand
Just one thing, man,
All those pretty mamas in Avalon, and I’m just one man.

Avalon, my home town, always on my mind.
Avalon, my home town,
Pretty mamas in Avalon, want me there all the time.
