about

This is my dark version of a song about running from enslavement toward freedom and praying that God will trouble the water (muddy it, so that when you entered the stream to hide your scent from the dogs, your pursuers wouldn't know where you'd stirred it up). Always interesting to find the verses arranged in red, white, and blue.... Recorded in a modal tuning (E-B-E-E-B-E).

lyrics

Wade In The Water

Wade in the Water, Wade in the Water, Children.
Wade in the Water. God’s gonna trouble the water.

Well, who’s that yonder dressed in Red?
God’s gonna trouble the water.
Must be the children that Moses led.
God’s gonna trouble the water.

Who’s that yonder dressed in White?
God’s gonna trouble the water.
Must be the children of the Israelites.
God’s gonna trouble the water.

Who’s that yonder dressed in Blue?
God’s gonna trouble the water.
Must be the Children now, let them through.
He’s gonna trouble the water.

Scott Ainslie Brattleboro, Vermont

A long history with older black blues and gospel players in the mid-South marks Ainslie's work deeply. He transcribed all of Robert Johnson's recorded songs for "Robert Johnson/At The Crossroads" (Hal Leonard, 1992) and has a teaching DVD on Johnson's music. A fine songwriter with a social conscience and a belief in the power of music to move and inspire, Ainslie's voice is a great force for good! ... more
