about

Beginning a new life, moving to Vermont from North Carolina, I was driving over the Delaware Memorial Bridge with one of Al Petteway's instrumentals in repeat, his "Requiem." Not knowing the origin of the tune (recorded as an improvisation on Sept 12, 2001), I began writing words to his melody and had to stop at a gas station on the NJ Turnpike to call him and ask permission to continue. Later, the spookiness of the choices I made and the origin of the tune embedded in his melody and the spirit of his playing became clear. We finally performed this together for the first time at the Swannanoa Gathering in North Carolina in the summer of 2019.

lyrics

When Our Loving Begins/Requiem (Words: Scott Ainslie/Music; Al Petteway)

I will not fall.
I will never fall again.
I will stand on the bridge rail
And jump in the wind.

There’s a map in my heart,
And the scars deep within.
I will not close my eyes
When our loving begins.

Maybe we’re not that different.
Maybe you’ve been hurt, too.
Maybe you hear that river
Calling to you.

Take the cold out of winter;
Take the ice from the sky;
Take the pain out of your heart:
And let’s build us a fire.
Let’s build us a fire.
